When Should a Connecticut Homeowner Get a Chimney Inspection?
When buying a home in Connecticut โ Standard home inspections provide only a superficial visual of accessible chimney portions. A dedicated chimney inspection before closing is essential.
After any significant storm or earthquake โ Nor'easters, high-wind events, or any seismic event can crack crowns, shift flashing, and create gaps invisible from the ground.
If you see water stains near the fireplace โ This indicates a leak โ most commonly failed flashing, a cracked crown, or deteriorated liner. Get an inspection before using the fireplace.
If you smell smoke in rooms other than near the fireplace โ A cracked liner or missing mortar joints in the chimney chase can allow combustion gases (including carbon monoxide) to enter living spaces.
Every 1โ3 years for actively used fireplaces โ NFPA 211 recommends annual inspection for chimneys in regular use.
The Three Levels of Chimney Inspection
Level 1 โ Basic Visual Inspection
No special tools. Inspector views accessible portions of the exterior and interior chimney. Checks for obvious obstructions, visible cracks, and condition of accessible components. Appropriate for chimneys in continuous service with no recent changes.
Level 2 โ Detailed Inspection (Most Common)
Includes all of Level 1 plus video camera inspection of the chimney liner from inside. Required when selling a home, after any chimney event (fire, storm), or when changing fuel type. Masonry Next performs Level 2 inspections with video documentation.
Level 3 โ Destructive Investigation
Includes all of Level 2 plus removal of components to access concealed areas when serious hazards are suspected. Rare โ reserved for cases where damage beyond the liner is suspected.
