What Is Repointing?
When repointing is needed:
- Mortar joints are recessed more than ΒΌ inch
- Mortar crumbles or can be scraped out with a finger or key
- Visible gaps between bricks or stone
- Water infiltration through wall faces
- Chimney mortar is eroding (common in Connecticut freeze-thaw climate)
What Is Tuckpointing?
- Filling joints with mortar that closely matches the brick color (making joints nearly invisible)
- Then cutting a narrow, contrasting "tuck" or "ribbon" of lime putty down the center of each joint
Where you'll see true tuckpointing in Connecticut: Old Wethersfield historic district, Essex village centers, some Yale campus buildings in New Haven, and pre-Civil War estate homes in Fairfield County.
What contractors usually mean when they say "tuckpointing": They mean repointing β removing old mortar and installing new. The terms have become essentially synonymous in the trade.
Which Does Your Connecticut Home Need?
True decorative tuckpointing is needed only if:
